I went for understated sophistication with this one. Those old Dunkin Donuts commercials were always cheerful, but Fred the Baker must have been lonesome working that early morning shift. An Edward Hopper atmosphere came to mind. This photo, actually a 1950s waffle shop, is from the Library of Congress Prints & Photographs Online Catalog. The LOC site has some pretty good historic images. This one was available high-res for immediate free download, but most of their other images require scanning (for a fee). I’ve used quite a few LOC images on my real book covers. Sometimes you have to wait a few weeks for the high-res scan, but it’s good to get an image that’s different from the typical stock photo fare.
I have never seen a Dunkin Donuts here in Colorado, but there was one on almost every block in Philly. I worked downtown for a few months before moving out of PA in 2000. I always looked forward to a chocolate glazed doughnut from the Dunkin Donuts inside 30th Street Station. They were super fresh, because they had to keep up with the crowds of commuters coming through every morning. Mmmmmm, good times.
